Candace O'Brien

Founder & President

Candace is an attorney and member of the Illinois Bar since 1992 who has dedicated over three decades to helping families grow through adoption and almost two decades to being an advocate for individuals and couples seeking to build families through surrogacy, regardless of their race, sexual orientation, marital status, or gender.

She has helped hundreds of individuals and couples — gay and straight — realize their dreams of becoming parents. She understands the complexities of the laws involved and is adept at managing the team assembled for each surrogacy arrangement. Most of all, she is passionate and dedicated to helping create families.

Her legal background shapes every step of the process: from screening to how contracts are structured, and how rights and responsibilities as parents and surrogates are protected from day one. Candace's role is not to represent you or your surrogate legally — you'll each have independent counsel — but having an attorney running your agency means that the process is structured, vetted, legally informed at every stage. Her legal background and expertise provides for a level of oversight and risk management that most agencies simply cannot offer — knowing not just what needs to happen, but why it matters legally, and what can go wrong when it doesn't.

Candace's approach to each surrogacy journey is to provide her continual support and expertise to both intended parents and surrogates, from the very first conversation through the day your baby is born.

Veronica Vander Krake

Surrogate Mentor

Veronica is our Surrogate Mentor. As an experienced surrogate herself, she serves as an invaluable resource — especially for first-time surrogates.

Veronica is a mother of two who, in addition to her role here at Advocates for Surrogacy, works part time as a caregiver for the developmentally and physically disabled. She completed her first surrogacy journey in February of 2017, delivering a perfect little boy into the loving arms of his two fathers. In Veronica's own words: "I LOVE ALL THINGS SURROGACY — helping complete a family is hands down one of THE most rewarding things I have ever, and probably will ever have done!"

What Drives Us

Our Philosophy

We believe surrogacy done right starts with the right people. That means an agency director who is personally involved from first contact to final delivery. It means a counselor who supports your surrogate emotionally throughout her pregnancy. It means a mentor who has walked the journey herself and can speak to it from the inside.

Every family we help build is a reflection of that commitment.
