Requirements to Become a Surrogate in Florida
If you’re thinking about becoming a surrogate, it’s important to understand the requirements before you begin.
Below you’ll find the eligibility, screening, and legal steps involved.
Basic Eligibility
- Age 21–41 (some clinics may allow up to 42 if in excellent health)
- Have given birth to at least one healthy child you are currently raising or have raised
- History of healthy, full-term pregnancies without major complications
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Non-smoker/vaper and no recreational drug use
- Healthy BMI (18–32 with some clinics approving up to 35)
- No major medical issues that could affect pregnancy (heart disease, diabetes, etc.)
- Not taking anxiety medications
- Not currently living in low income housing with no sliding scale flexibility
Reproductive History
- No more than 2, maybe 3 C-sections
- No more than 5 vaginal deliveries
- No history of severe preeclampsia, preterm birth before 35 weeks, or unexplained stillbirth
Lifestyle Requirements
- Stable home environment
- Willing to undergo medical, psychological, and background screening
- Able to attend all medical appointments (often early mornings)
- Willing to take injectable medications during the IVF process
- Supportive partner or family
Legal Requirements
- Must be willing to work with an attorney to sign a legal contract before medical procedures begin
- Must live in a state (Florida is one) where surrogacy agreements are legal and enforceable
Medical & Psychological Screening
- Full OB/GYN exam and lab work
- Infectious disease testing (HIV, hepatitis, syphilis, etc.)
- Psychological evaluation
- Review of all past pregnancy and delivery records
